About Green Ferret Posted by: vernacularsnoop | August 14, 2008 Free Saruul Agvandoorj!Just weeks after Ingrid Betancourt was freed in Colombia, Mongolian Green leader Ms. Saruul Agvandoorj has been imprisoned for taking part in a peaceful protest to free political prisoners who had been detained by Mongolian authorities following a disputed election. The organizer of the protest and leader of the Mongolian Citizens for Justice movement, Arslan Gombosuren, has also been detained. For sitting down in a public place with pieces of tape emblazoned with the word “Release” over their mouths, Saruul and Arslan have been imprisoned for 14 days. What will happen to them after 14 days is not yet clear.

Mongolians peacefully protest the detention of political prisoners
Take action now at www.greenchange.org to bring pressure on the Mongolian government to release Saruul Agvandoorj and Arslan Gombosuren. Greens in all countries should support our brothers and sisters who are struggling with authoritarian governments. So far, the events in Mongolia surrounding the disputed elections have flown under the radar of the US media, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t help Saruul and Arslan by focusing international scrutiny on the antidemocratic actions of the Mongolian government. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, in Article 20 (1), states that “everyone has the right to freedom of peaceful assembly and association.” By shining a light on the Mongolian government’s flagrant abuse of human rights, we can bring international pressure for the release of Saruul, Arslan, and all the Mongolians who have been imprisoned for taking part in peaceful protests.
